Forty arrows, one order. A wrong key holds you where you are.
One honest trade
Forty arrows, one order, and a clock that never pauses. The whole test is a single trade: pace against fumbles. Go carefully and the clock eats you. Go flat out and the wrong keys do — because a wrong key does not subtract points here. It holds you in place, and the clock keeps running while you notice, reset, and press again.
Do the arithmetic and the design shows its teeth. At a 400 ms rhythm, one fumble plus the recovery costs about a second — two and a half arrows’ worth of time for one wrong press. This is the speed-accuracy trade-off, one of the oldest and most stubborn findings about human movement (it shows up in research as far back as the 1890s): pushing speed always buys errors, and the only question is the exchange rate.
Where the time actually goes
The fastest runs almost never feel fast from the inside. They feel slightly slow — a pace just under the edge where your hands start guessing. Runs that feel fast are usually the ones with four wrong keys and a worse total.
The other secret is in the eyes, not the hands. Like sight-reading music, your eyes should live a few arrows ahead of your fingers, so every press lands on something already read. The next row is shown early for exactly this reason. If your eyes and your hands are on the same arrow, you are already late.
Zero wrong keys around 350 ms per arrow is an excellent run. And if you want to know how much of your pace is decision rather than movement, compare your per-arrow time here with your Lights Out time — the gap is the thinking.
Finding your honest pace
Start one notch slower than feels right, and treat the first row as calibration: if row one already has a wrong key in it, the pace was a lie from the start. From row three, once your hands own the rhythm, lean in gradually — runs that finish strong almost always ran negative splits, slower first row than last. Then judge the run by errors, not by feel. Three or more wrong keys means the pace was borrowed. Zero wrong keys on a run that felt comfortable means you left time on the table. The pace that wins sits exactly one notch below confident, and finishes with at most one mistake.
The anatomy of a wrong key
Wrong keys here come in species, and knowing yours tells you what to fix. The commonest is the early next — the arrow after this one, pressed one beat too soon, because your eyes drifted ahead and your hands followed them. That is a reading-distance problem: your eyes are allowed to live ahead of your fingers, but only just. The second is the mirror, left for right or up for down, which shows up when pace outruns reading — and it clusters in the last two rows, where fatigue does the outrunning for you. The rare third is the double-press, one key twice, which is not reading at all. It is grip tension, and the fix is a lighter hand, not a slower one.
Why forty
Eight arrows would be a twitch test — anyone can sprint eight. Forty is long enough that your real pace has nowhere to hide: the burst you opened with is gone by row three, and what is left is the system you actually run on. It is also short enough that a botched run costs you forty seconds and immediately proposes a rematch. The row breaks are natural breathing points, and the preview row exists so that breathing does not cost you time.
